Vancouver is blessed with one of the largest green spaces in a city in the world. Stanley Park opened in 1888, abutting downtown Vancouver. Since then, it has grown and changed but remained an amazing combination of wild forest and walking paths, beaches, and outdoor experiences!
ORIGINS
Before colonization, Stanley Park was the traditional land of the Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh and Musqueam First Nations and they used its resources freely. When the British came to the West Coast, they took the land so that the military could use it to watch over Burrard Inlet from any possible invaders. The city eventually leased the land from the military for $1 a year (this was a long time ago!) and it became known as Stanley Park, after Lord Stanley, the 16th Earl of Derby and the recently appointed Governor-General of Canada. This land has been maintained as a park ever since!
MODERN USES
Once a military base, now Stanley Park is a beloved part of the city for everyone who enjoys its lush greenery, walking paths and public art!
The Sea Wall is a paved walking path that is shared with bicyclists and roller skaters, and it follows the coast around Stanley Park. It offers some truly spectacular views of Burrard Inlet and a great way to get out into the cool ocean air!
Want a photo opp with some traditional Indigenous art? Stanley Park is home to several totem poles that have stood the test of history! Originally located at points throughout the land that became Stanley Park, they’ve since been moved to Brockton Point for all to enjoy! As the weather warms up, you can also enjoy Stanley Park’s beaches, or just bring a blanket to lie down on the grass! It’s a great way to experience the heart of nature in the big city!
